The 1750 Gentleman’s Magazine publication included an engraving of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, also known as Job Ben Solomon, whose life history was published in 1734. He was a Fulani Muslim cleric from Bondu (in modern-day Sénégal) who was captured, transported across the Atlantic, and sold into slavery in Maryland, before becoming free and eventually returning to his homeland.
