EUROTAST Copenhagen, Denmark
EUROTAST is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN), supporting a new generation of science and humanities researchers to uncover and interpret new evidence on the history and contemporary legacies of the transatlantic slave trade. The network will be running for four years from 2012 to 2016, and will enable 13 PhD researchers in history, archaeology, social anthropology, and population genetics to work collaboratively across disciplines to provide new perspectives on this history.
Our research will be focused on three themes: Origins, Life Cycles, and Legacies, which we hope will not only lead us to further detail on the slave trading system, but also help us demonstrate how slavery fundamentally shaped the cultural and biological experiences of people of African descent around the world.
Our pan-European network comprises ten academic partners and one industrial partner and involves leading international researchers from a wide range of disciplines working in Africa, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. The network is being coordinated from the Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In addition to the core research, EUROTAST aims to illustrate the outcomes and explore the implications of its work through engagement with wider audiences, particularly in partner locations. We are facilitating a variety of dissemination and outreach initiatives, being developed by the network's two successive postdoctoral fellows.
