This Abraham Lincoln campaign token is one example of the use of symbols and objects to convey the political message of the Republican Party. Depicted is an American eagle with shield, holding an olive branch in one talon and three arrows in other talon, surrounded by legend, “SUCCESS TO REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLES.” The reverse side has crossed laurel branches, within which is inscribed “NOT ONE CENT [STAR] FOR SLAVERY”; surrounded by “MILLIONS FOR FREEDOM 1860.”
