Pigeonnier Contributor: Whitney Plantation

Pigeonniers are roosting houses for pigeons. They were constructed prior to 1820. The bottom was used for storage while the upper story was entered through a second story door, via a ladder. They were in continuous use for about 150 years, since squab was eaten at Whitney well into the 1960s. The pigeon is not indigenous to North America. The French brought this European bird to Louisiana.
